The City of Ontario, California Fire Department is seeking a dynamic, highly technically skilled professional with strong interpersonal and visionary skills to serve as its next Fire Marshal. This critically important position is also a key member of the Fire Chief’s executive leadership team. This is a non-sworn, at-will position reporting directly to the Fire Chief.
The City of Ontario is a full-service general law municipality with a Council-City Manager form of government. The Ontario Fire Department has 265 personnel comprised of 213 sworn firefighters and 52 professional staff members serving our community across seven bureaus – Administrative Services, EMS, Fire Prevention, Operations, Personnel & Professional Standards, Support Services, and Training & Professional Development.

The ideal Fire Marshal will be a leader who is fair, ethical, decisive and whose leadership and decisions will focus on what is best for the Ontario community at large.
Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. A typical way to obtain qualifying experience would be:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field. Four years of qualifying experience may be substituted for two years of education.
Experience: Six years of progressively responsible experience in fire prevention, fire code enforcement, including three years of supervisory level experience.
Certificates: Certification as a Fire Inspector 2 by the State Fire Marshal (OFSM) or completion of the certificates required courses – OR – Certification as a Fire Protection Specialist by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OFSM). Equivalent certifications may be considered upon review.
Desirable: California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OFSM) Fire Marshal Certificate. California Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Plan Examiner Certification.
The City of Ontario offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The annual salary range for this position is $157,955.28 – $210,163.20. The City participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS).
